LECTURES

Week 1: Introduction/Briefing
31.03.2022

In our first class, Mr. Martin showed us a collage tutorial and told us that we could use our imagination to create a collage out of anything. Mr Martin asked us to browse Pinterest, pick our three favorite designs and say why.

Week 2
Introduction to basic composition
  •  Focal Point
  •  Scale & Hierarchy
  •  Balance the elements
  •  White space

Rule of Thirds
  •  process of dividing an image into thirds, using 2 horizontal & 2 vertical lines
  •  imaginary grid has 9 parts with 4 intersection points

Golden Ratio
  • a mathematical ratio, it fosters organic & natural-looking compositions that are aesthetically pleasing to the eye (through harmony & proportion)
  • a useful guideline for determining dimensions of the layout (simple way is to set ratio 1 : 1.618)

Composition (Framing & Cropping)
"Commonly used frames"
  •  Single
  •  Two shot
  •  Over the shoulder
  •  Point of view
  •  Insert shot

Week 3
Lasso Tool
- draw & pinpoint specific areas of a document

"3 different tool options"
  • Lasso
  • Polygonal Lasso
  • Magnetic Lasso

Pen Tool
  • creating a path from scratch (the fewer points, the smoother a path will be)
  • to create extremely precise shapes & paths, using manually placed anchor points

"Variation of Pen Tool"
  •  Straight line paths
  •  U shaped curves
  •  Simple S curves
  •  Complex S curves

Layering
  •  different images stacked on top of each other
  •  non-destructive editing
  •  never destroy the original image

Week 4
Adjustment Layer & Filters

Adjustment layer
  • a group of very useful, non-destructive image editing tools that add colour & tonal adjustments to an image without permanently changing any pixels
  • can edit & discard the adjustments/restore the original image at any time

"Basic understanding"
  • brightness (adjusting highlights) / contrast (adjusting shadows)
  • level (adjusting levels of shadows, midtones & highlights)
  • curves (editing tones)
  • exposure (adjust levels of exposure, offset & gamma)
  • selective colour (modifies the amount of primary colour without modifying other primary colours)

Filters
- change colour, add blur/create completely new image effects

INSTRUCTIONS

PROJECT 1A
Physics collage

I made three collages using pictures from magazines. Mr. Martin asked the students to vote for one of the first and second.

My favorite designs:

Design #1:
  Fig. 2.5:By Bored Panda
Describe:  This picture makes me feel a strong sense of oppression, a kind of depressive beauty.

Design #2:
                                                          Fig. 2.6: By Dawid Planeta
Describe: David has a series of mysterious grayscale illustrations, I was shocked when I saw it, especially this illustration, I had a dream about a huge whale flying in the sky, it was a strong sense of pressure, when I saw this picture I remembered that feeling again. He showed me a mysterious world that he created, and I saw depressed patients go on an orgy in their own world.

Design #3:
Fig. 2.7: Per Carlsen’s Surrealist Constructed Worlds Expand The Possibilities Of Architecture.
Describe: Oslo-based designer and architect Per Carlsen creates surrealist worlds beyond the realm of reality. What I like about this design is that it gives me the impression of being clean, lonely and comfortable.

PROJECT 1B
Digital Collage

I made digital collages using the rule of thirds and the golden ratio. After listening to Mr. Martin and my classmates, I chose the second piece as my final digital collage.

FEEDBACK

In class, Mr. Martin asked the class to vote for our best job. And then let me move on to the next term.

REFLACTIONS

In the process of voting, I also saw many students' work is very creative, which is worth learning from.
