LECTURES
Week 11
Visual Analysis
- a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements & principles; a description & explanation of visual structure for its own sake
- a critical part of visual literacy, to help people read & critically interpret images
How Does Visual Analysis Work?
Phase 1 : Observation
- closely looking & identifying the visual elements of a design, describing them in our own words (no reading beforehand about the design)
- about looking, thinking, & finding good language to communicate what is being noticed
Phase 2 : Analysis
- requires to think about the observations made & try to make statements about the work based on the evidence from it
- apply design principles knowledge to identify the design elements
Phase 3 : Interpretation
- observations, description & analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work & historical context that we find in trustworthy published sources
INSTRUCTIONS
Fig.1.1.“EQUALITY”
Choose Visual From Pinterest

This visual piece I found on Pinterest is called "EQUALITY". I'm not sure who the designer is, because the link doesn't say.
1. Observation
This poster uses a clear contrast between characters and colors. The face on the left is dark, with the corners of the mouth down and a blank look in the eyes. It does not look happy. The face on the right had white skin, steady eyes and bright red lipstick. It looked delicate. Red title and blue bow tie, in the overall black and white color is very conspicuous.
2. Analysis
The message of this poster is very clear. A clear contrast is used. The skin color of the left side of the face is different from the skin color of the right side, the hairstyle is different, the expression is different. You can see differences in race, differences in class, differences in the state of being treated unfairly. The overall color is black, white and gray, not bright colors. It expresses the dark situation caused by inequality. Clear the subject with a red headline. This is a poster advocating reducing inequality. The blue bow tie represents "gentleman" and the bow tie is like a scale. It means that no matter how different people are, as long as they are friendly, they should be treated equally.
3.Interpretation
In this day and age, there is still color inequality. The design meaning of this poster is to advocate equality, because mankind still has a long way to go in the pursuit of fairness.

I want to use the form of flowers to express that no matter what skin color is beautiful.

Fig.1.5.Sketch
I want the dove to wrap her wings around the flower, It can reflect peace and love
Fig.1.6.Sketch
I wanted to use elements of flowers. Because I think flowers are beautiful, and no matter what color of skin they have their own beauty. Ms. JinChi thinks the flowers in my sketch are too simple, there are all kinds of flowers and I should refer to them more. I looked through a lot of pictures of flowers, and finally I realized that I had designed flowers in my exercise work, so I decided to use my flowers to complete this work.
Fig.1.7.My Design
I chose the third pattern and modified the color. I used the color of skin to make the color of flowers.
Fig.1.8.
I marked the dove with a pen. I thought white was too monotonous, so I changed the color and used dark skin and light skin instead of white, which I thought deepened the meaning of my picture
Fig.1.9.
After designing the flowers and pigeons, I started to make the background. I used colored lines, but the effect was not good enough for me.
Fig.1.10.
So I thought for a long time, and I thought it would be better to add earth.
Fig.1.11.
I improved my background, since the main body looked a bit complicated, SO I didn't add anything else in the white space, just colored arcs.
In order to make the world colorful, God made people of different colors.
Ms. JinChi suggested that I change the color of the earth to a light color to highlight the flowers I wanted to express. And changing the pigeon's color to white will make it look better.

FEEDBACK
General Feedback:Ms. JinChi suggested that I look at the different patterns of flowers and pigeons.
Specific Feedback:I referred to many patterns and finally decided on the pattern I wanted.
General Feedback: I received Ms. JinChi's feedback and modified my work to look better.
Specific Feedback: Ms. JinChi suggested that I change the color of the earth to a light color to highlight the flowers I wanted to express. And changing the pigeon's color to white will make it look better.
REFLACTIONS
Experiences: I got a lot of ideas during the design process. Little by little, I improve my work, make it look better.
Observations: I think it is not easy to learn design, sometimes I have no inspiration for many days, I do not know where to start, my teacher suggested that I refer to the design works on the Internet, but I want to design works of my own style.
Findings:I have learned a lot about design. I am very grateful to Ms. JinChi, who is very patient and responsible. She always patiently tells me what I don't know, which has helped me a lot in my study.
