LECTURES
Week 7 :
3-Acts Structure / Storytelling basics
Central theme- main idea / underlying meaning
- a story may have both a major theme (an idea that is intertwined & repeated throughout the whole narrative) & minor themes (an idea that appears more subtly, & doesn't necessarily repeat)
Conflict - drives the story; creates tension & builds suspense (makes a story interesting)
Characters - there is always a protagonist & antagonist
- central characters (vital for the story's development, plot revolves around them)
- protagonist (main character of a story; has a clear goal to accomplish/conflict to overcome)
- antagonist (standing between the protagonist and their goals; represents a tremendous obstacle to the protagonist)
3-Acts Structure
1. Setup
- the world in which the protagonist exists prior to the journey, usually ends with the conflict being revealed
2. Rising Tension
- series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome
3. Conflict
- highest tension, major decisive turning point for the protagonist
Resolution
- conflict's conclusion; where the journey ends
INSTRUCTIONS
Act 1
Barry the dolphin and Joe the seagull are good friends. They often play on the surface of the sea. Whenever Joe came to see Barry, he brought him a flower from the land. Because Barry grew up in the sea, has never been to land.
Act 2
On this day, Joe came to Barry to play with a flower in his mouth as usual. Barry had not arrived yet, so Joe stood on the rock and waited for Barry. Barry was swimming slowly, and Joe was waiting quietly on the rock. A few minutes later, Barry finally arrives. He greets Joe, and Joe flies to Barry with a flower in his beak.
Act 3
Joe and Barry often compare their speeds during the race. This time, while they were resting, Joe landed on a "rock" and the shark came at him before Joe realized it was a shark. Joe flew away, but the shark did not give up chasing Joe. Barry was injured trying to protect Joe. When Joe saw that his friend was hurt, he flew to the shark and pecked it with his beak. Barry then attacked the shark. At last the shark ran away in a rout. Barry and Joe beat the shark and protected each other. They celebrated their victory. The sea was calm again, and they played happily on the sea as before.
Inspiration
I was inspired by the lyrics of a song of Jay Chou, Coral Sea, "Seabird and fish fell in love, it was just an accident", so I wanted to make a comic about love at first. But in the process of creating the story, I thought friendship would be better, so I became friendship-themed. I set seagulls and dolphins as good friends, who bravely protect each other when in danger and overcome difficulties. I think this is the power of friendship and the meaning of friends, when you are in danger will not leave you, will accompany you to fight.
I originally made a version but my classmates reminded me that I was doing it wrong. So I made a new version, and I sketched it out first to get my thinking clear.
This time I referenced a lot of other people's work and explored a lot. So I'm going to do better this time than last time.

When I uploaded to Webtoon, I ran into a problem that the page wouldn't load my Comic. I checked my size and there was nothing wrong with it.

After I brought this up to Ms. Anis, She suggested that I upload Webtoon images to a Google folder.
