LECTURES
Week 4
The reason to continue designing typefaces is to improve its legibility and also a form of artistic expression.
Process of Type Design:
1. Research
· Understand type history, type anatomy, the conventions and terminologies
· Determine the type's purpose or what it would used for and what different applications it will be used in
· Study existing fonts that are presently being used for inspiration/reference/context/usage pattern/etc
2. Sketching
- The use of traditional tool (pen and paper) is better than digital tools (iPad and Apple pencil) due to the nature of the strokes created by the hand. This does not mean we should not use digital tools.
3. Digitalisation
-Fontlab and Glyphs are applications used to digitize typefaces.
4. Testing
-Important component in the design thinking process. The results of the testing are part of the process of refining and correcting aspect of typefaces. Prototyping is also part of the process and leads to important feedback. However, it is not as crucial if the typeface is a display type
Week 5
Perception
is the way in which something is regarded, understood, or interpreted. In typography deals with the visual navigation and interpretation of the reader via contrast, form, and organization of the content.
Organization/gestalt: perceptual organization/groupings
Law of Similarity- elements that are similar to each other tend to be perceived as a unified group.
Law of Proximity- items that are close to each other tend to be grouped together.
Law of Closure- mind's tendency to connect and complete figures despite it being empty
Law of Continuation- Humans perceive each of two or more objects as different, singular, and uninterrupted objects even when they intersect.

Task 2 (A) Key Artwork
Week 4
Ideation and sketches
This week we were asked to design a logo using 4-5 letters of our names. My name is Chai HongHong, which in Chinese means a match burning redder and redder. My parents hope that my life can burn like fire, with passion and enthusiasm. So I decided to incorporate the element of fire into my logo.
I was exploring the fire element on Pinterest and I found the following reference images.
I tried two styles and Mr. Vinod thought the first one could be explored further and try more monograms.
Fig.1.4. sketches
In class, Mr. Vinod gave us 15 minutes to make a logo. I continued to experiment with fire elements, this time I used the Hong in my name.
Fig.1.5. process
After I removed the strokes in the letter O, I felt that the letter O was a bit hollow. I decided to add something to the letter O. After trying it again and again, I decided to use small flames to form a pair of eyes. I'm very satisfied, I think it's unique and has a weird style.

In class, Mr. Vinod asked us to find five well-done Word Marks. After looking at the five pictures I found, he said that the first one was wrong and the rest were good, but the fifth one was the best among them.

Week 5-Week 6
I chose a set of colors and then designed my poster. The following is my first attempt. Mr. Vinod thought that my layout was too single and had no changes.

Mr. Vinod suggested that I try more interesting typography layouts and suggested that I change products, so I started creating for the second time.
The following is the layout that I am quite satisfied with. I used flames to embellish the picture.

I changed the product to bags and clothes, and I designed a short sleeve with the letters typed separately.

Week7
The following is my initial attempt at Instagram layout. I used pink and white as the main background colors, then placed all my products on them and decorated them with parts of my logo.

I decided to animate the logo in the middle of the layout.
I replaced the previous cumbersome background with a simple and clear one. The same products are placed in the same post, and consumers can swipe left or right to learn more about the detailed styles. Below is my final layout.

Week 8
We were asked to design our logo on a t-shirt and wear it to class in week 9.
I chose this design, and I contacted the shop that printed the clothes, and they told me that they could only print to the chest, and my design extended beyond the chest to the sleeves, so they couldn't make it. They suggested that I shrink my logo, but I stuck with my design and I spent a lot of time exploring it, so I didn't want to change it haphazardly.
So I started contacting many shops that can print clothes on social platforms, and finally found one who was willing to try making this T-shirt.
Fig.1.35. My design in a mockup
I feel that my logo design is very similar to a trendy brand, so I chose an oversized t-shirt, which is more in line with the aesthetics of young people.
After choosing the style and color of the clothes, I started to put the logo on the clothes and typesetting them. The person who printed the clothes told me that he would try his best to help me get the effect I wanted, but there would be gaps in the printing on the sleeves. Because if I want to make my designs, I need to use a technology called silkscreen. That technology is only used by people who order a lot of clothes. And I only need one piece, so he can only use the method of making one piece.

Other Gains
When I was looking for a shop that prints clothes on social media, I happened to see a shop that sells custom hats. It just so happens that I like wearing hats, and the products I design include hat designs. So I ordered a hat.

When I posted the T-shirts and hats on social platforms, many people liked my design, so I sold 4 T-shirts and two hats.

Week 8
Specific Feedback: It’s a unique feeling to wear a product that I designed myself.
General Feedback: It's really fun to print your own logo on the product. I enjoy the process. When I designed this logo, I attached emotions to this logo. I want to integrate my logo and products better. , which makes me feel very accomplished.
REFLECTIONS
Experience: I think designing the letters of my own name is a very interesting job and it improves my creativity. In the 8th week, I was very excited when I got the printed T-shirt. This was the first time I had a T-shirt I designed by myself, and it felt very different.
Observations: In task 2 I learned to design new letter forms. I explored them many times, hoping to make my own letter designs more unique. I also have a better understanding of product design and can integrate products and designs better.
Findings: I like the letters I designed very much. I find that as long as I devote myself to this work seriously, I can experience the joy of creation. Unknowingly, I began to enjoy the process of learning.
FURTHER READING
The sixth edition of "Typographic Design: Form and Communication", written by Rob Carter and others, is an authoritative book that deeply explores the role of typographic design in communication. This book provides readers with a comprehensive perspective on understanding and applying typographic design by detailing the history, theory, and practice of typography.
After reading this book, my understanding of typography design has been greatly improved. The book not only introduces the basic principles of typography design, such as font selection, line spacing, alignment, etc., but also deeply discusses how typography design affects information transmission and visual communication. This book made me realize that typography is not just a technique for arranging words and images, but a powerful communication tool.
Through a large number of case studies, the book demonstrates the application of typography design in different media and application scenarios, such as book design, advertising, digital media, etc. These cases not only demonstrate the diversity of typography design, but also show how to adjust typography strategies according to the different needs of content and media. This practice-oriented approach is particularly helpful in applying theory to practical design work.
The author also emphasizes the importance of innovation and experimentation in typographic design. The book mentions that although it is important to follow traditional typography principles, designers should also dare to break the rules and create unique and expressive typography designs. This perspective inspires me to be more bold and innovative in my design practice.
In addition, the book's discussion of digital typography is particularly compelling. With the rise of digital media, typography design is facing new challenges and opportunities. The author's discussion of how to effectively apply typographic design in a digital environment provided me with valuable insights and guidance.
Overall, "Typographic Design: Form and Communication" Sixth Edition is a comprehensive, in-depth and practical book on typography design. It not only provides the necessary theoretical basis, but also demonstrates the application of typography design in practical communication through a large number of examples and case analyses. This book is an essential resource for designers who want to gain a deeper understanding of typography and apply it to real-world projects.
